The Black Box

We proudly present The Black Box – an elegant and sophisticated transformation of an existing rear extension and loft conversion, designed to enhance both functionality and aesthetics.

A key focus of the project was improving the building’s thermal performance, ensuring enhanced energy efficiency and comfort for a new family. All structural interventions have been kept to the bare minimum to keep the costs down whilst providing light and views where needed. The extension exterior is clad in charred wood, showcasing the fantastic Japanese technique of Yakisugi or Shou Sugi Ban . This traditional method not only imparts a rich, textured finish but also offers durability, weather resistance, and a timeless appeal. The dark, dramatic façade contrasts beautifully with splitface stone piers. Vertical structural elements have been emphasised with a raw stone cladding - both internally and externally. At loft level, the new rear dormer has been kept very traditional in accordance with the conservation area, with a striking pier in the centre as a focal point and to tie in with the ground floor extension.

The loft conversion now features a stunning, modern bathroom alongside a dedicated workspace. On the ground floor, a new cloakroom, utility space, and WC have been seamlessly integrated.

More than just an extension, The Black Box reimagines the existing home with a refined and modern architectural language. It merges bold, contemporary aesthetics with thoucghtful spatial planning, resulting in a project that is both visually exciting and highly functional. By celebrating the raw beauty of natural materials and employing innovative yet cost-conscious solutions, this project stands as a testament to the power of considered design. The existing extension has been completely retrofitted and thermally upgraded, avoiding the need for demolition. With its seamless blend of heritage and modernity, The Black Box not only elevates the home’s character but also contributes a distinctive and stylish presence to the surrounding Aldersbrook conservation area.
